Background

Bradford Drive, at Traralgon Victoria connects with the Princes Highway, [view on map]. Recent solar lighting projects such as the Smart Solar Lighting Project at Lakes Entrance have sparked interest in off-grid roadway lighting systems that are remotely monitored and controlled via our patented, web based SAM (Solar Activity Monitoring) platform.

Solution

The proposed solution for this location was the 10.5m ASPIRE solar roadway light. As it is well suited to illuminating intersections on multi lane highways. The ASPIRE solar lights have been deployed across main roads and intersections across Australia including the recently completed Waitpinga Road / Battye Road Intersection Upgrade in Victor Harbor, South Australia. This project saw a network of remotely monitored and controllable solar lights deployed at an off-grid intersection that required compliance with V class lighting illumination levels for multi-lane roadways. The outcome was hugely successful, saving the client time and money by minimising traffic disruption, and avoiding the high costs of mains power grid connection and supply charges.

The design necessitated avoiding the overhead power lines crossing the highway. A Flag Light on either side of the highway was deemed to be the best solution. One luminaire was positioned on each side of the highway – one situated at the edge of the turn off from the Princes Highway onto Bradford Dr, the other positioned on the opposing side of the highway to illuminate the break in the median strip for vehicles traveling in the opposing direction.

Even if mains power is available, solar lighting can be chosen due to high costs for grid connection, step down transformers and associated cable work. We are working with a lot more clients who have been shocked to learn how much money can be saved on installation and lower ongoing costs by going solar. We are increasingly receiving requests to work on solutions for smaller installations that would have previously been unreliable or too costly to pursue.

Green Frog Systems are the leading provider of ASNZS1158 compliant solar lighting solutions for Category V roadway lighting nationally, and can supply tailored solar powered options to clients seeking to illuminate streets, roadways and intersections.
